WHOIS vs RDAP: Registration Data Explained

WHOIS and RDAP retrieve registration information about internet resources; traditional WHOIS generally returns loosely structured text, while the newer HTTP-based RDAP protocol returns structured, machine-readable data.

How it works

A registration lookup can concern a domain, an IP network, or an autonomous system, and the responsible registry context differs for each resource. The records can describe allocation, registration, administrative roles, and dates, but they are not a universal ownership database and usually do not identify the person currently using an IP address.

What registration data describes

Registration data describes a registered or allocated internet resource and the organizations or roles recorded for it. Depending on the resource and registry, useful fields can include a handle, name, network range, status, creation or update dates, nameservers, entities, and published administrative or technical contact information.

The meaning and availability of each field varies. A domain record can describe a registrar, registry status, nameservers, and registration events, while an IP-network record can describe an allocated address range and the organization or registry entities associated with it. These records do not describe the same resource merely because both are available through a registration lookup.

Contact and entity entries can identify an administrative role, abuse desk, registrar, network organization, or service provider rather than the person operating a particular host. Read the resource type and field labels before drawing conclusions from a name or address in the response.

How WHOIS and RDAP differ

WHOIS is an older query-and-response protocol whose services commonly return text intended for people to read. Formatting, labels, referral information, and availability can differ between WHOIS servers, which makes reliable automated interpretation difficult.

RDAP uses HTTP and structured response objects. Standard fields and objects can represent items such as handle, startAddress, endAddress, status, entities, events, nameservers, links, and notices. Its structured form makes it easier for software to distinguish data from explanatory notices and follow the appropriate registry service.

RDAP does not guarantee that every possible field or contact is public, current, or populated. Privacy rules, registry policy, resource type, redaction, and the underlying registration record still determine what the response contains. A structured empty or redacted field is not evidence that no responsible organization exists.

Domain registries, IP registries, and RIRs

Domain registration involves domain registries and registrars, while IP addresses and autonomous system numbers follow address-allocation and registration systems. The organizations and referral paths involved in those systems are related parts of internet administration, but a domain registrant is not automatically the operator or registrant of the IP network hosting that domain.

Regional Internet Registries, or RIRs, administer IP address and ASN resources for their respective service regions and publish registration services for those resources. An IP-network result may therefore identify an ISP, carrier, hosting company, cloud provider, enterprise, or a larger organization responsible for an allocated range rather than an individual subscriber.

Routing data and registration data also answer different questions. A routed prefix can be associated with an originating ASN, while its registration record describes allocation or registry context. Those organization labels may agree, but one should not be treated as automatic proof of the other.

Privacy, redaction, and interpretation limits

Some registration fields are redacted, replaced with privacy or role contacts, or unavailable under the relevant policy. Other entries may reflect a parent allocation, delegated customer, historical name, or administrative organization. Dates can describe registration events rather than the start of a person's current use.

Registration data does not by itself prove who currently uses an IP, who owns a website's content or business, where a person is physically located, or who currently originates a network route. A subscriber, VPN user, hosted customer, cloud workload, or user behind shared NAT can differ from the organization named for the surrounding range.
