Does a VPN Hide Your IP Address?
A working VPN normally shows websites the VPN server's public IP instead of the public IP assigned by your usual network.
How it works
That outcome depends on the VPN being connected and carrying the traffic you are testing. Split tunnelling, browser extensions, IPv6 routing, DNS settings, and application-specific network paths can produce different results. IP intelligence can sometimes recognise a VPN range, but a negative detection result does not prove a VPN is absent.
Consider a simple comparison: on a normal connection a site sees an address assigned by your ISP; after connecting a VPN it should normally see an address operated by the VPN exit network. That is the core behavior most people mean by hiding an IP.
A VPN detector uses published and observed network intelligence. It can recognise some exit ranges, but it cannot identify every private, new, or self-hosted VPN. Treat the detection as evidence, not a verdict.
Practical guidance
- Check your public IP before connecting to the VPN, then check it again after connecting.
- Use the same browser and network for both checks so the comparison is meaningful.
- If the address does not change, inspect the VPN connection state and split-tunnelling settings.
